Speaker Bios

Moderator: Jeremy Smitheal, a partner at Riverside Resources 
The panel will be moderated by Jeremy Smitheal, a partner at Riverside Resources and joined the firm in 1995.  He is currently an adjunct professor in the Finance Department at the University of Texas at Austin, McCombs School of Business. Since 2008, he has taught BBA and MBA classes including Real Estate Investments, Urban Land Development and Decision Making.  In addition, he is active in various civic and professional organizations and currently serves or has served as a director, officer or advisory board member of the University of Texas Real Estate Finance and Investment Center, the Real Estate Council of Austin, Commercial Leasing Brokers Association, Austin Commercial Real Estate Society, and the Nature Conservancy. Jeremy obtained a B.B.A. with highest honors with a dual major in Finance and Real Estate and a M.B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. Also, Jeremy was the recipient of the 2013 McCombs School of Business M.B.A. Rising Star Award. Prior to joining Riverside, Jeremy worked as a corporate finance analyst at Bear Stearns & Company, participating in all aspects of investment banking including mergers and acquisitions, valuations and equity and debt offerings.

Chad Marsh, Managing Principal at Endeavor
Chad is currently the co-developer of the Domain, a seven-million-square-foot mixed-use development in North Austin, and is also overseeing the redevelopment of several other office buildings in Austin and San Antonio. Chad has an extensive background in the field of office and industrial development. As co-developer of Endeavor’s Domain project, he has been responsible for entitlements, master planning, financing, horizontal and vertical construction, marketing, and general oversight for 1.1 million square feet of Class A office space. In addition, he has acquired an additional 1.7 million square feet of space in office and industrial properties throughout Central Texas. Before joining Endeavor in 2002, Chad was a Senior Vice President of Office and Industrial Development with Trammell Crow Company. In this role he handled entitlements, design, and financing for three industrial developments and an office complex with a total of more than 750,000 square feet of space. Prior to that, Chad was responsible for leasing the company’s six-million-square-foot industrial portfolio.

Josh Delk, Vice President at Transwestern
Josh joined Transwestern in 2006. Josh is an associate vice president and project manager for the Central Texas Development Services group, which has developed over 5 million square feet of office and industrial projects in Austin, San Antonio and Houston. In addition to his role as a principal developer for the Central Texas Region, Josh acts as an acquisitions officer for Transwestern Sponsorship Equity Partners (TSEP), a value-add investment fund focused on acquiring office, industrial and retail projects in Central Texas and the Western region of the U.S. He was a key contributor in the recapitalization of a 140,000 square foot office project in San Antonio as well as the acquisition and related disposition of a 270,000 square foot Class A office project in Round Rock, Texas, both of which were performed on behalf of the fund in 2011. Josh was awarded the National Development Achievement Award for Transwestern in 2007. He was also recognized by the San Antonio Business Journal for his role in the development of Overlook at the Rim which was awarded the Best New Office Development of 2009. Josh joined Transwestern following graduation from the MBA program at the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas in Austin. Josh has experience in several facets of real estate finance and accounting, working with both institutional and private equity ownership groups.Prior to joining Transwestern, Josh worked as a portfolio management consultant with Sun Resorts International and as a senior asset management associate with Lend Lease REI. His responsibilities included the analysis of portfolio management operations and strategy, as well as performing feasibility studies on prospective real estate development and investment opportunities. He has also held positions as a financial services associate with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and as a senior associate for Cooper Graci & Company in Austin, Texas.

Doug Opalka, Senior Managing Director at HFF
Doug has more than 15 years of experience in commercial real estate capital markets. He is primarily responsible for originating debt and equity transactions throughout the United States with a specific focus on the Austin/San Antonio corridor. Additionally, Mr. Opalka is one of the leaders of HFF’s National Student Housing practice handling debt, equity and investment sales transactions within the sector, and also oversees the day-to-day operations of the debt placement group within the Austin office, which he co-heads. Mr. Opalka joined the firm in June 2011. Prior to HFF, he was a Partner and Founding Member of Texas Realty Capital. Prior to that, he worked at GMAC Commercial Mortgage where he advanced in the company from Real Estate Analyst to Assistant Vice President. Mr. Opalka began his career as a Real Estate Analyst at Archon Group | Goldman Sachs.
